Sunset over the sea on the west coast of Phu Quoc, with a long beach and palm trees

Independent guide · Sources checked October 2026

Phu Quoc, month by month

Phu Quoc has two coasts that are calm in opposite seasons, a festival calendar that runs partly on the lunar calendar, and evenings that now happen in three different parts of the island. This guide puts those three things side by side so you can choose your dates before you choose anything else.

Three questions to settle before you book

Most trips to Phu Quoc are planned around flights and hotels. The questions that decide whether the trip works are different: which side of the island will have a swimmable sea that month, whether your dates land on a holiday that fills every room, and where you will spend the evenings now that the old night market in Duong Dong has lost its site.

01

Which coast, which month

From roughly May to October the southwest monsoon pushes waves onto the west coast while the south-east beaches stay sheltered. In the dry months it is the other way round. West coast or east coast.

02

Holidays and festivals

Tet, 30 April, 2 September and the year-end weeks bring the crowds. The Dinh Cau festival follows the lunar calendar. Festivals and holidays · Peak dates.

03

Evenings by area

Duong Dong for the shrine at sunset, the south for Sunset Town, the north for Grand World. Night markets · Evening shows.

The year in four lines

December to March. The northeast monsoon season: the west coast is usually calm and dry, sunsets are clear, and this is when international arrivals peak. Tet falls in this window in most years; in 2027 Lunar New Year's Day is Saturday 6 February.

April and May. The hottest weeks, then the turn of the season. Two public-holiday breaks, the Hung Kings day and 30 April to 1 May, bring short domestic trips.

June to September. The southwest monsoon. Rain tends to come in spells of a few days rather than every day, but the west coast is often rough and the south-east bays at Bai Khem and Bai Sao become the swimming beaches. The 2 September holiday is the late-summer peak.

October and November. The changeover. Sources do not agree on exactly when the dry season starts. November brings the Dinh Cau festival in Duong Dong and the earliest sunsets of the year, around 17:40.

The full table, with rainfall and both coasts, is on Phu Quoc month by month.

Where the evenings happen now

For years the answer was simple: the night market on Bach Dang street beside Dinh Cau in Duong Dong. Its operator's lease ended on 31 December 2025, trading was allowed through Tet, and in April 2026 the special zone's chairman said the market would not be abolished but that a new site was still being studied. We have not found a later announcement, so treat that market as uncertain.

Evening life has spread out instead. On Long Beach there is a market along the Sonasea walking street. In the south, Sunset Town has the Vui Phet market, the Kiss Bridge and the shows run by the resort operator. In the north, Grand World has a timed sequence of shows from about 20:15. The Duong Dong, south and An Thoi and north island pages describe each area after dark.

How this guide is put together

Viva Phu Quoc is a reading site. It does not sell tours, tickets or rooms and takes no bookings. Each section that gives a time, a date or a price names its source and the day we checked it, because show times, market sites and holiday schedules change. Where sources disagree, we say so rather than pick one.

If something here is out of date, the about page explains how corrections work and the contact page has a form for the editors.

Common questions

Questions readers send

What is the single most useful thing to check before choosing dates?

Whether your dates fall on a Vietnamese public holiday. Weather on Phu Quoc can be worked around by choosing the sheltered coast; a holiday that fills the airport and the hotels cannot.

The festivals and holidays page lists the 2026–2027 dates we could confirm.

Is there still a night market in Duong Dong?

Its future was unsettled at our last check. The lease on the Bach Dang site ended at the end of 2025 and a new site was being studied in April 2026. Other evening markets operate on Long Beach, at Sunset Town and at Grand World.

Does Viva Phu Quoc sell tickets for the shows it describes?

No. The site describes shows, markets and festivals and points to the organiser's own page. Tickets are sold by the operators and their agents.
