Duong Dong after dark

Duong Dong is the island's main town, on the west coast where the Duong Dong river meets the sea. It is where most first-time visitors sleep and where the island's evening life began. Here is how its evenings work in 2026.

Duong Dong in the evening

Duong Dong was a town before it was a resort, and it shows after dark: shop-houses, cafes, the river with its fishing boats, and the shrine on the rocks at the river mouth. Since 1 July 2025 the former Duong Dong ward has been part of the Phu Quoc Special Zone in An Giang province, but the name on the map is the same.

Its evening used to run on one axis: sunset at Dinh Cau, then a walk along Bach Dang street through the night market. The market is now in question (see below), so the evening is looser: sunset at the shrine, dinner in town or along the river, and, for a market, a short ride south to Long Beach.

Dinh Cau at sunset

Dinh Cau stands on a rocky outcrop at the mouth of the river, reached by 29 stone steps. It honours Ba Chua Ngoc, Cau Tai and Cau Quy, and fishing families pray there for safe trips. It was rebuilt in solid form in 1937; the provincial tourism department notes that some accounts place the first shrine in the 17th century.

The rocks face west, so this is the town's sunset spot. VietnamPlus suggests about 17:00 to 18:00 as the time to watch, depending on the season; calculated times for 2026 run from about 17:40 in November to about 18:31 in July. Go 30 minutes early in the dry season, when the sky is usually clear, and treat it as a place of worship: covered shoulders inside, quiet near the altars.

On the 15th and 16th of the tenth lunar month the shrine holds its festival, with a procession, offerings and folk games on the beach. In 2026 that is 23 and 24 November. Details are on Festivals and holidays.

The night market question

The night market on Bach Dang street was run from 2015 by an operator under contract and had about 100 kiosks along some 500 m. The contract ended on 31 December 2025; vendors were allowed to trade through Tet; after the extension ended on 28 February 2026 power and water were cut, and some kept going on generators. On 1 April 2026 the special zone's chairman said the night market would not be abolished and that new sites were being surveyed. We have found no later announcement.

In practice: walk down to Bach Dang and look before planning dinner around it. The full timeline, and the markets that took over its role, are on Night markets.

Long Beach in the evening

Long Beach (Bai Truong) starts at Dinh Cau and runs south, nearly or more than 20 km depending on the source, with hotels along Tran Hung Dao road. Its evening centre is now the market on the Sonasea walking street, reported in January 2026 as open from 16:00 to 23:00 with more than 100 stalls, busiest from about 19:00. The national tourism authority picks out Long Beach for unobstructed sunsets, which makes the beach itself the free show of the evening in the dry season.

Morning before evening: the day market and fish sauce

Duong Dong's day market, by the river, is the island's largest and starts trading at around 4 in the morning; good crab is often gone by 7 or 8, according to a 2014 report that is old but still the most detailed we found. It is the place to see what the evening's seafood costs before the restaurant mark-up.

The town is also one of the two centres, with An Thoi, of Phu Quoc fish sauce. Nhan Dan counted more than 7,000 wooden barrels across the island's barrel houses in 2025. If you buy, pack the bottle sealed in checked luggage.

Getting around after dark

Duong Dong is the easiest base on the island for evenings without a car. Grab cars are most available around Duong Dong and Long Beach; taxis from Mai Linh, Vinasun and the electric Xanh SM fleet operate here. Sunset Town in the south is a 20 to 30 minute drive, according to its operator; Grand World in the north is about 24 km. The airport is close: sources give 7 km to 14 km depending on where they measure.

When Duong Dong is the wrong base

  • A swimming holiday from June to September. The town's beaches take the southwest wind; the sheltered bays are in the south-east.
  • If you want resort quiet. The town is the busiest part of the island in the evening.
  • If your evenings are all at Grand World. Stay in the north instead; the drive back is long.
  • If you came for the old night market alone. Check that it is trading before choosing a hotel for it.
