Read this first: the sources draw the seasons differently

Everyone agrees that Phu Quoc has a dry season and a wet season, and that the wet one comes with the southwest monsoon. They do not agree on where the lines fall. The differences matter most in October, November and April, so if your dates fall there, read the month rows below rather than a single season label.

The two coasts at a glance

JFMAMJJASONDWest coastEast and south-east

Our reading of the sources above: 3 = sea usually calm and little rain; 2 = usable, with windy or wet days; 1 = rough sea or heavy rain more likely. West coast = Long Beach, Ong Lang, Bai Dai, Ganh Dau. East and south-east = Bai Sao, Bai Khem, Ham Ninh.

The pattern is a mirror. When the southwest wind blows, from roughly May into October, Long Beach, Bai Dai and Ganh Dau get the waves and murky water while Bai Sao and Bai Khem, tucked into bays on the south-east, stay calm. When the northeast monsoon sets in, the west coast flattens and the east side takes the wind. The details are on West coast or east coast.

Rainfall is the long-term monthly average for Phu Quoc published by the Institute for Building Science and Technology. Another series gives an annual total near 3,000 mm, so read the figures as a shape, not a forecast.

December to March

These are the months most guides recommend, and the numbers explain why: January and February each average under 30 mm of rain. The west coast is at its calmest, which is what most hotels on Long Beach and Ong Lang are built around. Sunsets fall between about 17:49 in late December and about 18:02 in mid-January, so a sunset drink is early by European standards.

It is also the island's busiest stretch for foreign visitors. On 17 January 2026 the airport handled 47 international flights in a day; on 14 February 2026, the first day of the Tet break, it received 86 arriving flights, 50 of them international. The east side can be windy when the northeast monsoon is strong, and boats from the mainland are sometimes held in port: in November 2025 the fast boats from Rach Gia and Ha Tien were stopped for gusts of force 7 to 8 and waves of 1.5 to 2.5 m.

April and May

April is the hottest month and the last dependable one for the west coast. Average rainfall jumps from 61 mm in March to 148 mm in April and 281 mm in May, which is the turn of the season in practice. Two holiday breaks land here: the Hung Kings commemoration on the 10th day of the third lunar month (25 to 27 April in 2026) and the 30 April to 1 May break (30 April to 3 May in 2026).

June to September

The southwest monsoon months. Rain tends to come in spells, sometimes three or four wet days and then a dry week, but the sea on the west coast is often too rough for swimming and the water turns cloudy. A resort worker and a local guide quoted by VnExpress advise staying in the south, around Bai Sao and Bai Khem, in this season. Local people quoted in a 2024 VnExpress report put Bai Khem's calm months at June to September.

Hotel rates are lower on average in this half of the year, but the 2 September National Day break fills the island anyway. For 2 September 2026 the airport expected about 570 flights and 84,800 passengers over the holiday, with 148 flights on the peak day. The Mid-Autumn festival falls on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month and is mostly a family and children's evening.

October and November

October averages over 350 mm of rain and is still a southwest-monsoon month on most measures, although the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism and VnExpress both count it as the start of the dry season. November is the real changeover: rainfall drops to about 164 mm, the west coast starts to settle and the northeast wind begins to reach the east side.

November has two dated events in 2026. The Dinh Cau festival in Duong Dong runs on the 15th and 16th of the tenth lunar month, which is 23 and 24 November 2026, and Vietnam Culture Day on 24 November is a paid day off from 2026. The earliest sunsets of the year, about 17:40, fall in mid-November.

When month-by-month planning breaks down

  • Short trips of two or three nights. A single windy front can take out the beach days you planned, whatever the month. Choose a base where the evenings work without the sea.
  • Boat days to the An Thoi islands. They depend on that day's wind and waves, not the month. After a canoe capsized on 11 July 2026 on the way back to An Thoi, the special zone ordered that boats must not leave in bad weather.
  • Fixed holiday dates. If you can only travel over Tet or 2 September, the crowd matters more than the weather. Read Peak dates first.
  • Rain as a deal-breaker. Even the drier months have showers, and the long-term averages hide year-to-year swings. Check a short-range forecast in the week before you go.

Common questions

Questions readers send

Which is the driest month on Phu Quoc?

January and February, with long-term averages under 30 mm of rain each. March is close behind.

Is it worth going in the rainy season?

It can be, if you stay on the south-east side around Bai Sao or Bai Khem, where the bays are sheltered from the southwest wind. Expect showers and do not count on boat trips.

Why do guides disagree about October and April?

They are transition months. Some sources count October as the first dry month and April as the last; the 2021 climate study puts the dry season from December to April. Check a forecast close to the date.
