Phu Quoc night markets, area by area

The night market most guides still describe, on Bach Dang street beside Dinh Cau, lost its site at the end of 2025. Here is what we know about it, where the other evening markets are, what to eat, and how to avoid paying more than you meant to.

Check before you go

The Duong Dong night market on Bach Dang street has no confirmed long-term site. Do not plan an evening around it without checking locally that it is trading.

Three other evening markets were operating at our last check: one on Long Beach, one at Sunset Town in the south and one at Grand World in the north. They are newer, and two of them sit inside resort developments. The old Duong Dong market is still the one in most printed guides.

Duong Dong: the Bach Dang market by Dinh Cau

The market on Bach Dang street, at the river mouth beside Dinh Cau, was run from 2015 by an operator under a contract with the local authority and had about 100 kiosks along roughly 500 m. It was the island's default evening out: grilled seafood, rolled ice cream, dried squid and pearls. What has happened since is set out below in the order it was reported.

DateWhat was reported
31 Dec 2025The operator's contract ends; local people quoted by VnExpress complain of stalls discharging waste into the river
Jan 2026Vendors allowed to keep trading through Tet; the market to stop after 28 February
After 28 Feb 2026Power and water cut; some vendors keep trading on generators
1 Apr 2026The special zone's chairman says the night market will not be abolished and new sites are being surveyed

At the April meeting, eighteen vendor households asked to stay on Bach Dang, to stay until the end of 2026, or to move to a new site; officials said the current site no longer had a sufficient legal basis. We found no later announcement. If you are in Duong Dong, walk down to Bach Dang and see; if it is closed, the riverside and the shrine at sunset are still worth the evening.

Long Beach: the Sonasea walking-street market

The nearest replacement for visitors staying in Duong Dong or on Long Beach is the market on the Sonasea walking street along Tran Hung Dao road. In January 2026 VnExpress reported more than 100 stalls split between food and shopping, open from 16:00 to 23:00 daily and busiest from about 19:00. Food includes grilled cobia, crab and squid, crab noodle soup and crab fried rice; shopping includes pearl jewellery, fish sauce, sim wine and dried seafood. Dishes were quoted at 100,000 to 500,000 VND depending on the seafood and its size, a reference figure from January 2026.

The south: Vui Phet market at Sunset Town

Vui Phet (also called VUI-Fest Bazaar) is in Sunset Town, the resort district near An Thoi at the southern tip. The operator lists it as open from 16:00 to midnight daily with more than 100 stalls along the seafront streets: crafts, souvenirs, clothes and island products, plus fresh seafood, grilled pork rolls and fish-cake noodle soup.

Getting around inside the district: a buggy costs 15,000 VND per person and runs from 08:00 to 23:00, according to the operator's page, and a free bus runs from Sunset Town to the market from 18:00 to 21:30, a ride of about 10 minutes. The operator says that from the town centre you can see two firework displays in one night. For the shows themselves, see Evening shows.

The north: Grand World

Grand World, the canal-and-shopping district beside Bai Dai in the north, has its own night market with hundreds of stalls selling grilled seafood, snacks and drinks, including island dishes such as sea urchin, comb pen shells, squid and Ham Ninh crab. VnExpress described it in January 2026 as open until late, without giving hours. The draw is that it sits next to the evening shows at Grand World; the drawback is distance, about 24 km from Duong Dong.

What to eat and what to buy

  • Sea urchin (nhum). Grilled in the shell with oil, peanuts and spring onion, eaten with salt, pepper and lime. The national tourism authority lists it as a night-market dish.
  • Ham Ninh crab. Small, pink-shelled and spotted, usually boiled and dipped in salt-pepper-lime.
  • Herring salad (goi ca trich). Raw herring with coconut, herbs and rice paper; see the caution below.
  • Fish-cake noodle soup (banh canh cha ca). A late-night bowl rather than a seafood feast.
  • Dried squid and shrimp. The easiest edible gift; many stalls vacuum-pack on the spot.
  • Fish sauce and sim wine. Pack in checked luggage, sealed against leaks, as Vietnam Airlines advises.

Pearls are where caution pays most. VOV and VnExpress have both warned that unusually cheap night-market pearls may be imitations made from shell powder and glue. Raw and lightly cured seafood can carry bacteria and parasites; Vinmec advises children, pregnant women and people with weak immunity to avoid it, and lime juice does not cook fish.

Ask the price first

Seafood on Phu Quoc is often sold by weight, and the bill depends on the species, the size and the day. In February 2026 a visitor's complaint about a plate of six tiger prawns charged at 300,000 VND over Tet led the special zone to order an inspection and remind the restaurant to display its prices. Tuoi Tre News quoted a resident who paid 800,000 VND a kilo for live tiger prawns at Duong Dong market just before Tet, against about 280,000 VND on ordinary days; other locals put the holiday market price at 500,000 to 600,000 VND. All figures are from February 2026.

  • Ask the price per kilo or per portion and the weight before the seafood goes on the grill.
  • Pay in Vietnamese dong; prices in Vietnam must be listed in VND.
  • If something goes wrong, the special zone's Tourism Rapid Response Team, set up on 26 February 2026, works around the clock and takes complaints about prices and service, including through a multilingual QR feedback system.

When a night market is the wrong plan

  • Heavy-rain evenings in August and September. Most stalls are open-air.
  • If you want the Duong Dong market specifically. Its status was unsettled at our last check.
  • If you are staying in the north and want Sunset Town, or the reverse. It is a long drive each way, and ride-hailing cars are scarce late at night outside Duong Dong and Long Beach.
  • If you have a seafood allergy or a weak stomach. Grilled-to-order stalls share grills and sauces.
