Tet

Tet is the one date when demand clearly runs ahead of supply. In January 2026, the director of the An Giang tourism department said rooms were practically sold out until Tet, that even official delegations struggled to book, and that some travel firms had booked rooms nearly two months ahead for groups. Tet falls in the dry season, so beach weather on the west coast is usually good, but it is also the season of northeast winds that can stop the boats from the mainland.

For 2027, Lunar New Year's Day is Saturday 6 February. The proposed public break was either 4 to 10 February or 5 to 14 February when we checked; the government decides. Price behaviour is visible in food as well as rooms: a resident quoted by Tuoi Tre News paid 800,000 VND a kilo for live tiger prawns at Duong Dong market just before Tet 2026, against about 280,000 VND on ordinary days.

Late April to early May

In 2026 the Hung Kings commemoration (25 to 27 April) and the 30 April to 1 May break (30 April to 3 May) ran almost back to back. These are Vietnamese public holidays, so the extra demand is mostly domestic and short. April is the hottest month and May is when the southwest monsoon arrives, so the west coast can turn rough in the second break.

Summer and 2 September

The rainy season is the cheaper half of the year on average. A hotel price comparison site's figures, read in September 2026, put average rates highest in February and lowest in July; treat that as a trend, not a quote. School summer holidays still bring Vietnamese families.

The 2 September National Day break is the summer's sharp peak. For the 2026 break (29 August to 2 September) the airport company expected about 570 flights and over 84,800 passengers, up about 67% and 82% on 2025, with 148 flights and over 22,000 passengers on the peak day. A booking platform cited in the same report saw holiday bookings up about 86%. The special zone required businesses to post prices publicly and banned overcharging, touting and holding back rooms.

November and the year-end season

From November the west coast settles and international arrivals build towards the January peak. In 2026 late November has a domestic surge of its own: Vietnam Culture Day on 24 November, with a four-day break proposed from 21 to 24 November, and the Dinh Cau festival on 23 and 24 November. The New Year break itself brought more than 175,700 visitors in four days in 2026, about 29,800 of them international.

How prices and availability move

We do not publish room or fare prices, because they change daily and depend on the booking channel. What the reporting shows is the pattern: rooms run out first at holiday peaks, restaurant prices for seafood follow market prices up, and the authorities respond with reminders to post prices rather than caps.

  • Fake listings. In January 2026 the tourism department warned of fake hotel websites and fan pages that took transfers and then disappeared, and of properties selling rooms they no longer had.
  • Overbooking. Some properties sell on several platforms without updating availability; get written confirmation from the hotel itself for peak dates.
  • Help on the island. The Tourism Rapid Response Team set up on 26 February 2026 handles price and service complaints around the clock.

How far ahead to book

  1. 01

    Fix the date class first

Is your trip on a public-holiday break, near one, or clear of them? That decides everything below.

  2. 02

    Holiday breaks: book early

In January 2026 the island was practically full until Tet, and some firms had booked rooms nearly two months ahead.

  3. 03

    Confirm directly

For any peak date, get the booking confirmed by the hotel itself, not only by a platform or a page on social media.

  4. 04

Leave a buffer for the sea

If you are coming by fast boat in the northeast-wind season, avoid a same-day connection to a flight.

APEC 2027 and the building work

Phu Quoc is preparing to host the APEC Leaders' Week in 2027. VnExpress reported in July 2026 that it will be held in November 2027; a National Assembly paper in October 2026 did not give exact dates. The airport expansion, with a second runway and a new terminal, is targeted for March or April 2027 depending on the source. Expect road works around the airport and the south-west, where the convention centre is being built at Bai Dat Do, and expect the event dates themselves to be restricted and busy once announced.

When a peak-date trip is a bad idea

  • First visit, flexible dates. You will see more and pay less a week either side of a holiday break.
  • Last-minute plans for Tet or 2 September. Rooms that are still available close to the date are often the ones with problems.
  • Trips that depend on a boat day. The holiday crowds and the weather both concentrate on the same few departures.
  • If quiet evenings matter. Holiday nights at Sunset Town and Grand World are their busiest. See Evening shows for the alternatives.

Common questions

Questions readers send

When is Phu Quoc least crowded?

Outside the public-holiday breaks, in the rainy-season months, when average room prices are lowest. The trade-off is a rougher west coast.

How early should I book for Tet?

In 2026 some travel firms booked rooms nearly two months ahead and the tourism department said the island was practically full. Earlier is safer, and confirm directly with the hotel.

Do prices go up on holidays?

Yes for rooms, flights and seafood. Ask prices before ordering, and report problems to the Tourism Rapid Response Team.
